Our History
What began as a small act of protection became a community movement for girls’ safety and education.
After completing university in 2012, founder Leshan Sancha returned home to rural Kenya troubled by the absence of girls from his community in higher education. Girls in Narok and Migori Counties faced barriers including FGM, early marriage and deeply rooted cultural expectations that often pushed them out of school. When girls began refusing FGM, some had to flee their homes. Leshan and trusted friends opened their homes to 15 girls during the high-risk December period, providing safety and a chance to continue learning. As more girls sought protection, the community mobilized resources and built a small rescue centre. The shelter grew into a learning and mentorship space that also engages boys as allies in changing harmful norms. HOPE for Girls Education Africa was officially registered as a community-based organization in 2015 and expanded in 2024 as a nonprofit organization with a wider geographic mandate.
